The Righteous Honor God, They Are Not Afraid of Him

Matthew 10:28 King James Version (KJV)
And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

In aforementioned verse the word fear that refers to “them which kill the body” ergo man, is the same word that refers to “Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell”. However, in the latter, the reference is to God. The same word fear, but has different contextual meanings as translated from Greek and Hebrew.

Let’s examine that word “Fear” because it is often misunderstood in scripture:
The word “Fear” in Greek is phobéō and in Hebrew it is yārē. These words mean to be afraid, terrorized, and also reverence, to be in awe. As it relates to our relationship with God the word fear means to reverence or to be in awe. It never means to be afraid or in terror unless one is in sin. The first instance of man being afraid or in terror of God occurred after Adam and Eve disobeyed God:

Genesis 2:16
And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:(KJV)
Genesis 2:17
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.(KJV)

Genesis 3:9
And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where [art] thou?(KJV)
Genesis 3:10
And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I [was] naked; and I hid myself.(KJV)
Genesis 3:11
And he said, Who told thee that thou [wast] naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?(KJV)
Genesis 3:12
And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest [to be] with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.(KJV)

When one does not know the love of God, or is separated from God because of sin, they take on the attribute of satan who in deed fears God:

James 2:19
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.(KJV)

That is why when we submit to God, the demons tremble when they see us because we take on the righteousness of God:

James 4:7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.(KJV)

Further, the Bible gives this description of the righteous:

Proverbs 28:1
The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.(KJV)

Our loving and yet awesome Father in Heaven wants us to come boldly to Him in reverence, not being afraid.

Hebrews 4:16
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.(KJV)

You see, fear is a spirit that is not of God. It is a demonic spirit that God did not give us. He loves us too much to use fear to draw us to Him, we have to come to Him on our own accord out of love and respect:

2 Timothy 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.(KJV)

And this is the reason why our God did not give us the attribute of satan (fear), but His own qualities (love and self-control):

1 John 4:17
Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.(KJV)
1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.(KJV)

Then we can make this proclamation:
Hebrews 13:6
So that we may boldly say, The Lord [is] my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.(KJV)

I think it would behoove us to honor our Lord.. God gave us this commandment:

Ecclesiastes 12:13
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear (honor) God, and keep his commandments: for this [is] the whole [duty] of man.(KJV)

Revelation 14:6
And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,(KJV)
Revelation 14:7
Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.(KJV).
