Mark 3:27King James Version (KJV)27 No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house. Let us review this verse in the context of which Jesus was speaking:
Mark 3:23-27King James Version (KJV)23 And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.26 And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.27 No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house. So Jesus was speaking in parables. A parable is a symbolic narrative of common life conveying a moral message. So let us search the Scriptures to understand this moral message and then we can answer you question with practical application of God’s word.
House refers to the body of man. Man is a trichotomy comprising of body, soul and spirit:
Genesis 2:7King James Version (KJV)7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.So the essence of man is spirit living in a body and he has a soul. Paul also refers to this trichotomy in conveying his blessing:
1 Thessalonians 5:23King James Version (KJV)23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.By definition the soul comprises our mind, emotions and will. It is what distinguishes the personality of one individual from another.
Because of the nature of the soul, it is sometimes referred to as the inner man, whereas the Body or flesh is referred to the inner outward man:
Job 14:22King James Version (KJV)22 But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
2 Corinthians 4:16King James Version (KJV)16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. This inward man is renewed daily by the word of God:James 1:21King James Version (KJV)21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. The word renew in the aforementioned verse is translated from the Greek sozo (G4982) and means to preserve. The word soul is translated from the Greek psyche (G5590) and in context is the “seat of the feeling, desires, affections and aversions of human. It is also called the heart of man in scripture and as warned in Scripture; must be guarded with all diligence:
Proverbs 4:23King James Version (KJV)23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.As noted; guarding our heart is our responsibility. This is not the same as our spirit. If we are born-again believers, our spirit is saved because we are joined to the Lord by our spirit:
1 Corinthians 6:17King James Version (KJV)17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. However, because we are joined to the Lord by our spirit and not our soul, we can will (an attribute of the soul) to depart from the Lord though sin:
1 Timothy 4:1-3King James Version (KJV)1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
Romans 6:16King James Version (KJV)16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Having laid the foundation, let us return to your question and I will respond from a spiritual perspective:
"PREVENTING sin from coming into your house where you are THE STRONG MAN. STRICTLY IN LINE WITH CHRIST “
As you appropriately phrase your question, you personified sin:“PREVENTING sin from coming”. Sin and the devil are the same:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
The word committeth is translated from the Greek poiéō (4160) and in context means to make; to form; or to produce. Since it is the devil who has done these things in the beginning, then verse is referring to the devil and spiritual co-horts:
Revelation 12:7-10King James Version (KJV)7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
We see this same serpent enticing Eve:
Genesis 3:1-3King James Version (KJV)3 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LordGod had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.Adam was the strong man, he was made in God’s image and likeness and the Garden of Eden was his house; he had domino over it:Genesis 1:26King James Version (KJV)26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. In fact Adam also had fellowship with God because God brought the animals to him to name:Genesis 2:18-20King James Version (KJV)18 And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.God gave Adam charge over his creation, even before Eve was created:
15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
God even gave Adam the rule over satan by virtue of the fact that he was in the garden when God gave Adam the rule over the garden:
Genesis 3:1King James Version (KJV)1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?I will digress right here to explain the aforementioned verse. When the Bible refers to satan as a serpent, it was not describing a talking snake; one that had vocal cords. Unlike the ass that spoke to Balaam, this serpent is a description of the spiritual nature of satan being crafty as a serpent. Remember in Revelation 12:9, satan is described as a serpent.
The word beast is translated from Hebrew hayyāh (G2416) and simply means living thing. Satan is a living thing, so it is not referencing satan as being a satan. The word field is translated from the Hebrew śāḏeh (H7704) and means domain. Hence, satan was in Adam’s domain (his house).
Now, the scripture gives us the first example of how Adam the strong man (because of his relationship with God) was bound up:
Genesis 3:1-6King James Version (KJV)1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LordGod had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Note in verse six that Adam was WITH HER…. Adam was not a far off. The whole time satan was enticing Eve; Adam was with her and yet said nothing: bound. Adam himself was bound by sin, God had made Adam ruler over satan and everything in his house. Adam chose to yield his soul to satan, by his own will he chose to serve satan by not resisting satan’s seduction of Eve.
Because Adam being the strong man was bound, his goods, metaphorically, the world was spoiled; satan took dominion not only of the Garden of Eden, but the whole world:
Romans 5:12King James Version (KJV)12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:Now this is where God’s parable is made real to us.
Remember, we went to Scripture and saw that we are essentially spirit beings, living in a body and we have a soul. Our body then, Jesus likens to our house:
Mark 3:27King James Version (KJV)27 No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.
Matthew 12:43-45King James Version (KJV)43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. So Jesus then is referring to the house of one who is wicked. Jesus referred to the generation of that dispensation as being wicked; all had sinned which is why Jesus was made human to become the sin offering for the world:
1 John 4:9-10King James Version (KJV)9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins."PREVENTING sin from coming into your house where you are THE STRONG MAN. STRICTLY IN LINE WITH CHRIST “
Those who are not born-again are not the strong man. They are already in bondage to satan and don’t even know it. Satan has already come into their house and manipulated them through their soul so that even if they try to do the right thing in their own strength they fail. Such was the case with Paul when he was sold under sin prior to his rebirth:
Romans 7:14-24King James Version (KJV)14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?Notice in verses 22-23 the confusion of his inner man or in this case the inner man is called the inward man which his soul. Also notice in verse 20 that the spirit of sin dwelleth in him. Clearly, he is describing a period when his house was the dwelling place of satan. It was at that time when he was so discombobulated that when he thought he was doing right because he loved God, he was doing wrong. A case in point can be related to one of Paul’s experience when he was a Pharisee as recorded in the book of Acts:
Acts 23:6King James Version (KJV)6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.Paul recounts when he went about persecuting Christians, thinking he was doing God a favor. The Pharisees had little regards for People of the way who were followers of Jesus because they did not accept Jesus as the Messiah:
Acts 22:1-15King James Version (KJV)22 Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.2 (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)3 I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.4 And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.5 As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.6 And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.7 And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?8 And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.9 And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.10 And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.12 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,13 Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.14 And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
With this spiritual transformation, Paul became one with the Lord:
1 Corinthians 6:17King James Version (KJV)17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. As such he and not satan became the strong man:
Isaiah 40:31King James Version (KJV)31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. The phrase wait upon is translated from the Hebrew qāwāh and in context means intertwined; joined together.
Because of this union with God; his strength deriving from the spirit of God, Paul’s spirit was renewed. He had the nature of God:
2 Peter 1:2-4King James Version (KJV)2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.Paul was no longer the dwelling place of satan, but was the dwelling place of the Almighty God:
John 14:23King James Version (KJV)23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.Paul’s house was no longer his, but was the temple of the living God:
1 Corinthians 6:19-20King James Version (KJV)19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. "PREVENTING sin from coming into your house where you are THE STRONG MAN.Now because your house is no longer your own, but God’s, it is impossible for the spirit of sin, darkness to come into the house because God is light and the darkness cannot comprehend it.
John 1:5King James Version (KJV)5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.1 John 2:8-9King James Version (KJV)8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. However, the inner man of the born-again believer; the soul (mind, emotions, and will) of the born-again believer can still be influenced by sin. If satan is successful in this influence, the born-again believer will sin and unless they repent, they will again be in bondage to sin, such was Paul’s warning to born-again believers:
Galatians 5:1King James Version (KJV)5 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Peter also made similar warnings:
2 Peter 2:20King James Version (KJV)20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
"PREVENTING sin from coming into your house where you are THE STRONG MAN.
If one is not a born-again believer they are not the strong man; satan is. If one is a born-again believer, they are the strong man but the house is not theirs it belongs to God.
Zechariah 12:10King James Version (KJV)10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.Romans 8:15-17King James Version (KJV)15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
