UNDERSTANDING "BINDING AND LOOSING FROM BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE02.06.17 | Biblical Study Of God's Word | by Bishop Lonnie Henderson“BINDING.” Actually, this phrase is commonly misapplied in the Body of Christ. It is taken out of context from the following verses: Matthew 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.(KJV) And Matthew 18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.(KJV) “BINDING.” Actually, this phrase is commonly misapplied in the Body of Christ. It is taken out of context from the following verses:Matthew 16:19And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.(KJV)AndMatthew 18:18Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.(KJV)To bind means to decree or pronounce, and to loose means to declare as not being a part of, or invalid:A good example of binding as used in scripture can be found in the book of Job:Job 22:28Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.(KJV)In the context of the verse decree is synonymous with the word bind. Jesus made such a decree in the following verse:Matthew 16:18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.(KJV)He was decreeing that the strength of satan (in this verse hell was a personification of satan and not a place) will not prevail against His church (meaning us since we are the church). In other words He was pronouncing our victory over the strength of satan. This is further supported in other scriptures, but I will use a verse in the book of Luke as an example:Luke 10:19Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.(KJV)In this verse the first instance of power (exousia , strong’s code 1849) means authority, the phrase of “to tread on” indicates the defeat of satan – he is at our feet and we are to keep him under authority by our obedience to the Lord. Serpent spirits are those category spirits that cause death such as the spirits behind the tsunami and earthquakes, wars; spirits behind natural disasters, and those implemented or executed by man to include abortion. Scorpion spirits as described in scripture or those spirits that do not cause death, but torment such as fear or hurtful words and threats. The role of scorpion spirits is described in the book of Revelation:Revelation 9:1-5And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment [was] as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.(KJV)The second instance of power is a different Greek word, it means might (dunameos, strong’s code 1411) . So God’s word is saying that our authority is greater than satan’s might. This is because Jesus has stripped satan of his weapons of warfare, I wull take you to scripture to support that truth:Colossians 2:6As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, [so] walk ye in him:(KJV)Colossians 2:7Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.(KJV)Colossians 2:8Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.(KJV)Colossians 2:9For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.(KJV)Colossians 2:10And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:(KJV)Colossians 2:11In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:(KJV)Colossians 2:12Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with [him] through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.(KJV)Colossians 2:13And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;(KJV)Colossians 2:14Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;(KJV)Colossians 2:15[And] having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.(KJV)The first instance of spoil in verse 8 is translated from the Greek sulagogeo (strong’s code 4812) and in context it means to carry away or lead astray. The second instance of spoil in verse 15 is a somewhat different Greek word (apekduomai , strong’s code 554) meaning to strip or deprive of power. This is why Jesus tells us in Luke 10:19 that we can tread upon these spirits and nothing by any means can harm us. We can submit to God and resist the devil and he will flee without engaging in spiritual warfare because he has been deprived of power.Let’s return to Matthew:Matthew 18:18Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.(KJV)The term bind then, in this verse does not mean to tie up or to restrict, but rather to confirm or pronounce what God has already done in heaven. It comes from the Greek word deo (Strong’s code 1210). Therefore when using the term bind, you can not use it alone. You must articulate what it is you are pronouncing and it must confirm what God has already done in heaven. This takes us to the next command that is not uncommonly decreed without authorization for lack of knowledge.“I bind you and send you before judgement before Jesus. I forbid you in the name of Jesus to ever return in our lives or anyone else that comes in our paths”The appointed time of satan’s judgement before Jesus is not yet. This is not the time that God has predetermined for satan to be banished “to ever return in our lives or anyone else that comes in our paths”.This truth is clearly supported in scripture:Matthew 16:18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.(KJV)This scripture tells us that the strength of satan is still free to test us, or try us, but when we submit to Jesus as His church, satan will not prevail against us.1 Peter 5:8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:(KJV)1 Peter 5:9Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.(KJV)1 Peter 5:10But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle [you].(KJV)These verses convey that satan is at liberty to test our faith, but these testing or trials will work to our benefit because we will be strengthened by it.Ephesians 6:12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].(KJV)This verse confirms that satan still allowed to inhabit the heavens, but does not have the might to wage war, but he is still able to wrestle with us to test our faith and in the process cause our faith to be strengthened. So there are reasons why God Himself chose not to decree satan to be banished “to ever return in our lives or anyone else that comes in our paths”. These reasons are beneficial to us who submit to God:Romans 8:28And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose.(KJV)Sometimes we don’t know how to pray as we ought, but thank God for the Holy Spirit who helps us were we fall short:Romans 8:26Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.(KJV)Romans 8:27And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what [is] the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to [the will of] God.(KJV)Now let’s revisit Matthew 18:18 for further understanding:Matthew 18:18Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.(KJV)The word loose is translated from the Greek lúsō and means to loosen what is fast ; to invalidate, or to disannul. A good scriptural example of this is found in the book of Isaiah:Isaiah 28:18And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.(KJV)So while we don’t have authority to prevent satan from insurgent activity; because God Himself has not decreed it in this age, we do have the authority in the name of Jesus do arrest the prince of the air’s activities such as atmospheric disorders to include tornadoes and hurricanes. We also have authority to cancel natural disorders caused by satan such as tsunamis and earthquakes. Jesus gave an example of this authority and admonished His disciples for not exercising such authority over the prince of the air:Matthew 8:23And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.(KJV)Matthew 8:24And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.(KJV)Matthew 8:25And his disciples came to [him], and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.(KJV)Matthew 8:26And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.(KJV)The Greek word for tempest in verse 24 is seismós (4578) and in context means an earthquake in the sea; tsunami. So while we don’t have the authority to banish satan, we do have the authority to make decrees and declarations against his activities; whether it be taking authority over infirmities, natural disasters, demonic possession; demonic influence of any kind. God has empowered us with the authority of the name Jesus when we submit to Him.We make these declarations by speaking to the spirit causing these activities and commanding them to cease; declaring that the works will not stand and disannulling any contract that was made with them. We can for example make null any of man’s laws that circumvent God’s commands because we know that this was the influence of demonic spirits manipulating the legislators. We do it in faith, knowing that it will be overturned in God’s appointed time. There is no need then to speak evil of dignitaries that behave outside of the will of God because they themselves are in bondage and don’t even know it. It is our responsibility to intercede on their behalf and take authority over the works of satan with spiritual decrees and declarations in the name Jesus; disconnecting the puppet strings that are manipulating them.
